Why Choose Time Dynamics?

It was said "No one ever got fired for buying IBM",so why should a large established business look to a small new business for a product it needs?

To answer this question it's best to look to my last business Nexus Alpha Ltd and ask why the "Southeastern" railway company looked to Nexus Alpha Ltd back in 1992 in preference to the former British Rail Computing or the former British Rail Research, both had good software development capabilities.

Ultimately these two large organisations were busy and had plenty to do without having to consider the exacting requirements of the "Southeastern" railway company as determined by a young and rising star who had come up from the rail control room and so was in a good position to know exactly what was needed at the coal face.

He was a man who wanted to get things done and he realised that being one of two customers (the other was the BBC) of the fledgling company Nexus Alpha Ltd, he was more likely to see things happen than being one of hundreds of customers of a big company.

That was back in 1993 and since then Nexus Alpha Ltd has grown from two people to closer to over fifty and its systems have played an important role in travel information in all UK control rooms for over 30 years.

Perhaps there is a similar rising star in your company ready to create a similar revolution but in integrated time and project management with Chronograph.

The Roots of Time Dynamics

As technical director and 50% owner of Nexus Alpha Ltd I was the main man at the top of both software and hardware development, and during the growth of the company I gained experience at every level of operations from programming to project management. Innovation was at the core of our business and so also project management and I have to say that even though our customers were pleased with the products and services they received, more product development work was late than I would have liked.

Of course we did all the usual planning with Microsoft project and so on but inevitably it seemed that some task or other would take longer than expected. Often this was because we were cutting new ground and so could not have known better, sometimes it was because a key person was seconded to an unforeseen higher priority task for a day or two, and occasionally it was simply that we should have known better. Trying to trace a delay back to it's sources was a difficult task.

Eventually I established a system that worked that combined the time tracking with the planning and reviews. Surprisingly it was not based around project management software but ended up being a custom time tracking application we wrote in house, a spreadsheet for each individual and then a very large spreadsheet for the project as a whole. A monthly project review could take up to a week to do.

I sold my half of Nexus Alpha Ltd in 2005 but with the idea for Time Dynamics Ltd in the back of my mind. 2020 it was time to create another business but I did not want to start any business without having the time management tools I so badly needed back then. Surprisingly those tools still don't exist.

Indeed a friend working for a large aerospace company is currently managing his team with a combination of Gantt charts and - you've guest it - spreadsheets!

I still have the same passion for programming, people and projects as I did then and an unquenching enthusiasm for effective organisation and quality. I took inspiration from the aerospace and construction industries both being time critical and safety critical industries.

A notable difference between Nexus Alpha and Time Dynamics, besides that Nexus Alpha is a name know throughout the UK rail sector and beyond and is now 27 years older than Time Dynamics; is that Time Dynamics uses Ada as the basis for software development with its superb track record in life critical applications, in preference to C/C++ or Java. C and C++ do not offer the security we expect on multi-programmer projects, indeed the cyber-security industry largely deals with issues in code written in C/C++. Java is not a life critical language and Just In Time compilation has it's issues.

I initially wrote the first time tracking and planning web-server in C++ in 2012. In 2020 I re-wrote the whole time tracking and planning web-server in Ada to prove my choice of Ada and despite a few niggles with Ada the benefits it offered over C++ are substantial just in terms of time saved debugging.

Our Clients

Our ideal clients are working on innovative engineering projects, probably in electronics and aerospace. However the tools might equally be at home in the building sector or even the studios of graphic designers and architects.

Our Staff

Our staff will include a Marketing Director, Sales & Support Director, Sales & Support Manager, Sales & Support Persons, Programming manager, and Programmers.

Careers

We keep scanning the horizon for people with flair, people who stand out rather than stand still. People with initiative or experiences rather than paper qualifications. If you think this might be you then click for our careers page to read more about working with us.
